FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
1.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING MY INITIAL VISIT?
When you arrive at the clinic, you will be asked to fill out basic patient information along with a questionnaire regarding your incontinence symptoms and/or pelvic pain. Your treatment will begin with a review of your basic medical history by the therapist along with a detailed history of your current condition. You will be given a chance to ask the therapist any questions and the treatment will be thoroughly explained to you.
After a thorough explanation, your
evaluation will begin with an external and internal pelvic exam to determine
muscle strength and assess the general muscle tone of your pelvic floor. This will also assess any areas of increased
pain or muscle spasm.
After the evaluation you will be
instructed in a home exercise program and be given a bladder diary to
complete prior to your next visit. You
will also be provided with a brochure explaining treatment options and
tips/pointers to follow. Additional
written educational information will be provided on an individual basis as
determined by your evaluation.
2.
WILL I EXPERIENCE ANY PAIN DURING THE EXAM/TREATMENT?
Unless you have a diagnosis of pelvic pain and experience pain to touch, your exam and treatment should be pain free. Every effort will be made to make sure that you are comfortable during treatment and your exam will be very similar to a gynecological exam performed during your annual check-up (minus the speculum!). During a biofeedback session you will place a sensor in your vagina and this is similar to the placement of tampon. You should not experience any pain with this.
3. HOW LONG WILL MY TREATMENT LAST?
Your initial evaluation will take approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes (including time for you to complete paperwork). Subsequent visits will last 45 minutes-one hour. We make every effort to ensure that you will not have to wait any longer than 5 minutes for your scheduled appointment time.
4.
WILL I SEE THE SAME THERAPIST DURING EACH VISIT?
Unless there is a scheduling conflict, your evaluation and all subsequent visits will be with the same therapist to maintain continuity.
